THE ALBANY MILL - This mill, which occupies four storeys and cellar, is making rapid progress towards completion. The rapidity with which the building operations have been carried out reflects credit upon Middleton enterprise, the contract having been undertaken by Mr. Chas. Collinge, of Gas-street. It is fireproof, being in that respect like the neighbouring Townley Mill. The whole of the share capital has been subscribed, and over 2,000 other shares were applied for after the share list had been closed. The mill is 19 windows long by 12 deep and has a substantial and imposing appearance. The architects are Messrs Wild and Collins of Oldham. Two thirds of the roof is on and is now bring slated. When completed the mill will contain 56,500 spindles, weft and twist, but the proportion of each we are unable to give. The first portion of the machinery from Platts arrived on Wednesday, and which were the condensers for the engines. Unlike the Townley Mill there are no reservoirs attached to the Albany, as the company under a lease dated 1846 possess the rights of the Brook running past the mill. This right has been the equivalent to a saving of about £1,000, which would have been required but for it. [Middleton Guardian - Saturday 10 May 1884 page 5]
