The trustees for rebuilding Newton-hatch church, have determined on a chaste gothic stone building, from the designs of Mr. W Atkinson, architect, of Manchester, which is likely to be a great ornament to the neighbourhood.  [New Monthly Magazine and Universal Register, Vol 2. 1 October 1814 page 279

Newton Church – The trustees for rebuilding Newton Church in the parish of Manchester, are desirous of receiving from persons willing to  contract for  building a Stone Church; to be let in two parts, viz: one for erecting the Stone and Brick work, and the other for the rest of the Artificer’s work, viz: slaters, joiners and carpenters, plumbers, glaziers, plasterers, painters, and ironmonger, work, according to the plans, elevations sections, &c. and the specification now deposited and seen at the office of Barrett and Wilson in Pall Mall.

The proposals are to be presented to the Trustees sealed up, at a Meeting which will be held for that purpose, at the house of Elizabeth Atkinson, the Bull's Head in Failsworth, in the parish of Manchester, on Monday, the 2nd day of January next, at eleven o'clock in the forenoon, when the time for completing the work will determined upon, and the persons offering will be expected to attend, with the names of sufficient sureties for the due performance of the contracts. At half-past twelve o'clock Friday, the ceremony of laying the first stone of the new Church at Newton took place, in the presence of the building committee and Mr. Atkinson,  architect; after which the workmen retired to partake of a handsome treat prepared for them Mr. Barker, the treasurer, at the sign of the Shears, in Newton.
