The schools were situated on the south bank of the Irwell, east of the present Redclyffe Road and north of Chapel Place. (Chapel Place originally ran through a tunnel under the Bridgewater Canal to the West Lodge of the de Trafford estate). Built as a memento of the marriage of Sir Humphrey and Lady Mary Annette, the school was demolished in 1889 when the Irwell was widened to create the Ship Canal. It was always a purely educational establishment open to children of all denominations.
