Alterations: Liberal Club, Union Street, Leigh
in 1897 the directors of the Liberal Club decided to make extensive improvements and alterations, and called in Mr W. E. Axon, architect, who made a number of very valuable suggestions, which, when carried out, converted the club into the present bright and cheerful place. The entrance in Union-street was closed, and added to what now constitutes the card room; the main entrance was placed in Church-street, the visitor being admitted through a glazed vestibule door into a hall, the bar being in front, the card-room on the right, and the secretary’s room and the public hall on the left. A broad staircase leads to the billiard room, the reading room, and the domino room. The new club was re-opened on Tuesday, 19 October 1897 by Mr. C. P. Scott, M.P.
