In 1911, a special appeal was made for funds to enlarge Altrincham Hospital as a memorial to King Edward VII, and Dunkerley was engaged as the architect. The modifications were considerable and included extra wards and service blocks at the rear of Peter Pon's original building. During the First World War, extra pressure was put on hospital resources for the treatment of wounded soldiers, and in 1916 Dunkerley built a special ward for military cases which he paid for personally. He was a member of the Hospital Board for many years until shortly before his death. The whole of the building was demolished in 2016 and has been replaced by a Health and Wellbeing Centre. [RF]
