New Build

This house, situated between Ambleside and Skelwith Bridge, was recently finished for Col. F. Haworth. It is built in the local manner, with 2 feet thick external walls of flat bedded blue stone, obtained on the site, and stuccoed. The roof is of small grey Tilberthwaite slates, and the constructional woodwork is mostly of oak. The living-room and inner hall are divided from one another by a movable screen, and so may be thrown into one large oak-panelled room. The drawing-room has a simple decorated plaster ceiling, modelled from the architect's design by Mr. Miller of the firm of Earp, Hobbs & Miller, who did other carving and modelling in the house, especially an external outside electric-light bracket upon the entrance gable, the casting of which was done by George Wragge Ltd. Mr. George H. Pattinson, of Bowness-on-Windermere, was the builder, and the oak-work was executed by James Hatch & Sons, of Lancaster, who also carried out the joinery and carpentry. The lead rain-water heads and the casements, etc, were carried out by George Wragge, Ltd., of Salford, and the electric lighting by Gilbert Gilkes & Company, Kendal. The work was superintended locally by Mr. Mason, ARIBA, of Ambleside. [Recent English Domestic Architecture. 1908 page 36]
