Built for Eddowes Bowman, the house is in the Gothic style with heavy stone dressings to windows and doors. Eddowes Bowman was a keen amateur astronomer and the design incorporated an observatory, which could be rotated to follow the stars, at the top of the tower. Pevsner: Lancashire and the South-East attributes the house to J S Crowther. However, it is difficult to believe that Eddowes Bowman would employ other than his brother as architect
