Located on the Crystal Brook, about 15 km upstream from Crystal Brook township, Beetaloo Dam was 32.8 m high, has a crest length of 140 m (not including the spillway) and has a capacity of 3,200,000 cubic metres of water, its catchment area being 48 square kilometres. It is a curved gravity dam containing 43,400 square metres of concrete, no suitable building stone being available locally.  At the time of construction, it was the largest concrete dam in the southern hemisphere. Although enabling works commenced in 1886 it was not until February 1888 that the first concrete was poured, the dam being finally completed in October 1890.
