Belle Grange is a house on the west bank of Lake Windermere, close to Hawkshead, and was originally owned by the Curwen family, who built the Round House on Belle Isle. It was bought in the 1880s by William Warburton of Bowdon, a cousin of Dunkerley’s mother, and the family solicitor. He commissioned Dunkerley to make the alterations, which mainly consisted of an extension at one side of the house. Plans are held in Cumbria Archives at Workington. Warburton later engaged Dunkerley to design a new house for him, Cragwood, on the opposite side of the lake.
