PEMBROKE COLLEGE'S NEW ANNEXE - Work is nearing completion on a new annexe for Pembroke College, Oxford. It is being built in Beef Lane, to the immediate north of the college, at a cost of £25,000, nearly all of which will come from funds provided for Oxford University by the late M. Antonin Besse. When it is completed all Pembroke College freshmen will be able to spend their first year in college and half of the college's 180 students will be able to live in. The building has been designed by Sir Hubert Worthington and is of Clipsham stone. There are three storeys and the college arms are to be cut on a shield over the main door. BESSE BUILDING - The £25,000 annexe to Pembroke College, was formally opened at Oxford today by Sir Douglas Veale, the University Registrar. He was presented with the key by Sir Hubert Worthington, the architect. The annexe, in Beef Lane, built almost entirely out of funds given by the late M. Antonin Besse, is of three storeys in Clipsham stone, It contains 12 sets of rooms - 10 for undergraduates and a double set for a Fellow, who will be in charge of discipline. Floors are sound proofed and the furnishings are in polished oak. Pembroke will now be able to let all freshmen spend their first year in college, and will be able to accommodate half Its 180 students in college. …… Mr. R. B. McCallum, Vice-Master of Pembroke College, said that it was the first time the college had built outside the original island site between Beef Lane and Brewer Street.
