LITTLEBOROUGH — The Littleborough school board proceeded on Thursday night in last week to select a design from those submitted in competition for a new school at Summit. The plans bearing the motto "1A" were chosen, on the recommendation of a committee, and on opening the envelopes they were found to be by Messrs Butterworth and Duncan, South Parade, Rochdale, who were formally appointed architects for the new building at a commission of £5 per cent, on gross cost.  [Building News 7 February 1896 page 223]

BOARD SCHOOL, SUMMIT, LANCASHIRE – This school has just been opened. It takes the place of the old Wesleyan School. Messrs Preston and Dryland were the contractors, Messrs Butterworth and Duncan the architects. The school has been planned as a central hall school, to accommodate 426 scholars; but at present provision has been made for only 246 scholars. These will be accommodated as follows: 90 in what will become the central hall but is now the principal schoolroom; two classrooms for 48 scholars each, and an infants’ classroom for 60 scholars.
