NEW BOARD SCHOOL IN HULME The memorial stone of the Board School which is in course of erection in Upper Jackson Street, Hulme was laid yesterday by Mr T Dale, vice-chairman of the Manchester School Board. The school is designed to accommodate 1020 children, and the estimated cost (exclusive of the expense of furnishings) is £8,800. … In the course of an address Herbert Birley, chairman of the School Board commented - With regard to this new school building, very careful attention has been given to the purpose for which it is designed. It may be that a larger plot of land would have been preferred, but building land within the city is very costly, and the Board would not needlessly or extravagantly burden the ratepayers. With a view to convenience and economy, the basement storey under the school building will be made to serve as a covered playground, the outer ground having been reduced to the same level. The playground can thus be utilised in all weathers for recreation, for physical exercises, and for drill. The school-rooms are lofty, light, and well-ventilated, and they will afford ample accommodation for 1,000 children in the four departments, according to the liberal requirements of the Committee of the Privy Council for school buildings.
