Bridgewater Mill was acquired by Godfrey Ermen in about 1860 as an addition to the Bentcliffe Mill in Eccles and the Victoria Mill at Weaste, all devoted to the manufacture of sewing cotton, according to a patent awarded to Ermen in 1851. The mill traded as Ermen Brothers until 1875, and Ermen and Roby until 1898, when it was bought by English Sewing Cotton Ltd. It still traded as Ermen and Roby in 1911, when It operated 30,000 spindles (4’s to 40;s twist) with a workforce of 600, between the Bridgewater and Nassau Mill sites. It later traded as Sir Richard Arkwright and Co. Ltd until it closed in 1980 with the loss of 380 jobs. The date of demolition is unknown, but the site is now occupied by housing.
