BRITISH WORKMAN INSTITUTE AT WILMSLOW - A British Workman Institute was opened at Wilmslow on Saturday by Mr Thomas Fairclough of Liverpool. The building is gothic in structure and has been erected from the designs and under the superintendence of Mr H R Price, architect, of this city; the builder being Mr J K Coates of Wilmslow. It contains on the ground floor a reading room, 35 feet long by 22 feet; a kitchen with large cooking range and other apparatus. On the first floor is the lecture room, seating about 300 which is 52 feet 9 inches long by 28 feet wide and 16 feet high. It is well lighted and ventilated and heated by Constantine's heating apparatus. Special attention has been given to the ventilation by means of flues built into the walls for the admission of fresh air, the vitilated air being carried off at various points at the ceiling level. The total cost of the building has been £1,500 including site, and of this £1,100 has been subscribed. [Manchester Guardian 5 November 1877 Page 5]
