The Club, which is situated in Great Clowes-street, is a handsome brick building in the Italian style. Upon the ground floor there is a spacious reading room and a lecture hall, the latter of which is named after the late Mr Cobden, being capable of accommodating between 300 and 400 people. The first floor contains a smoke room and billiards room, which is fitted up with three tables; and there are the usual offices in various parts of the building. The architect is Mr J S Whittington, Cross-street; Messrs Armstrong and Dow, Lower Broughton were the contractors. Mr J J Harwood, Strangeways, has carried out the painting and decorating and Messrs Orme & Sons, St Ann's-street have done the furnishings. The total cost of the Club, which includes a large bowling green, will not exceed £3,500. [Manchester Guardian 20 November 1878 Page 6]
