New Dispensary Hospital, in Walmersley Road. The handsome bequest of the late Mr Norris gave impetus to this project long entertained by many of the inhabitants. The site, containing about five statute acres, was presented by the Earl of Derby, and the designs were supplied by Mr Lawrence Booth. The building, which now approaching completion, will at once provide accommodation for20 patients, with a capacity of ultimately incommoding 60 patients. All the outside walls are faced with stone, and, being built with a cavity, are cased inside with bricks. The interior wood work is of pitch-pine varnished, and ward day-rooms, are warmed by ShiIIito and Shorland's open grates. [Barrett Directory of Bury 1880: Page 11-12]
