The Castle Cinema was opened on 13 August 1914 for William Skipp. It passed to Shipman and King in April 1938 who modernised the cinema in 1939 to the plans of architectural firm Howis & Belcham, who gave it an Art Deco style. War damage closed the cinema between July, 1944 and September 1946. S&K closed their older Hertford cinema on 28th November 1959 After a few years it was demolished and a Civic Centre built on the site, which can also show films.

The new hall is to be erected immediately behind the present kinema and has a capacity of 1,100. An innovation which will be a good source of revenue is the provision of display cases flanking the vestibule and entrance and a café is also provided for. The new hall can be constructed with only a minimum closure, whilst the entrance is being rebuilt. [Kinematograph Weekly 19 January 1933 page 43]

Accommodation is planned for 1,500 persons, and there will be an arcade of shops. [KW 24 August 1933 page 32]
