The Chevra Walkawishk was founded by Lithuanians from the neighbourhood of Walkawishk in 1871. In 1894 it purchased a former Chapel at the corner of Park Street and Cheetham Hill Road and became the Central Synagogue. It moved to Heywood Street Synagogue in 1928.

NEW SYNAGOGUE - On Sunday afternoon there was crowded assembly to witness the formal opening and consecration of the new synagogue at the corner of Park Street. The structure was formerly used as a place of worship by the Congregationalists, but had been given up owing, we believe, owing to the removal of its supporters to other parts of the city. Being admirably situated for the Jewish community, and larger synagogue being desired by them, the building some six or eight months ago passed into their hands, and under the direction of Mr. J. H. Maybury, architect, of this city, has been converted into one of the most elaborate and beautifully equipped synagogues in Manchester. There are separate entrances for males and females and the ground floor will be used as classrooms and for other purposes. Tho opening ceremony was performed by Sir Samuel Montagu, to whom a gold key was presented by Mr. Charles Isaac Sassoon. [Monday 28 January 1895 page 6]
