A MACE FOR SALFORD, PRESENTATION BY MR LEES KNOWLES M P – This work of art has been executed by Mr Alexander Fisher from a design by Mr W D Caroe, a college friend of the donor, and a Lancashire man. It is of silver, hammered and cast, as well as chased in different portions. The charges on the four shields are in translucent enamel, the whole of the mace being richly gilt. The chief ornament is the Rose of Lancaster. In the spiral arrangement of the stem there are several embossed bees in metal, whilst on the bowl are the letters E VII RI, the Royal arms, the arms of the Borough of Salford, and the arms of the donor. Around the rim is the inscription in repousse work - “A gift to the county borough of Salford, from Lees Knowles MP on the Coronation day of King Edward the Seventh, August 9, 1902. Samuel Rudman, Mayor.” [Manchester Guardian 11 June 1903 page 5]
