ROYTON CHURCH – A memorial chancel and window have been added to this church by the family of the late John and Jane Holden of Royton. The church is a plain brick building of the middle of the eighteenth century, and the new chancel, which has been built from designs by Mr H Cockburn, architect, of Middleton, is planned in anticipation of an entirely new building. The roof is open, having six principal rafters resting on carved stone corbels. The chancel opens into the nave by a lofty arch, a portion of the flat ceiling of the nave having been removed for the display of this arch. On the north and south sides arches open into the vestry and organ chamber. A large east window of five lights with moulded mullions and tracery head has been filed with stained glass. The floor is paved with foreign encaustic tiles of delicate and subdued tones of colouring, and of a dead and non-slippery surface. A low stone screen forming arcades supported on pairs of serpentine shafts marks the entrance to the chancel. A memorial pulpit with panels enriched with figures of our Lord and the Evangelists, on gold grounds, is placed on the south side of the nave. [Manchester Guardian 21 August 1883 page 8]
