Chorlton Union Workhouse.
CHORLTON UNION - TO BUILDERS. The Guardians of the poor are desirous of RECEIVING TENDERS for the execution of the various WORKS required in the ERECTION of the UNION WORKHOUSE. - Parties wishful to tender may inspect the plans and specification, between the hours of ten and four, at the offices of Messrs Mills and Butterworth, architects, Cross Street, Manchester, on or after Monday the 13th January 1840. Sealed tenders ... on or before 28 January 1840.
This was presumably the first Chorlton Union Workhouse in Stretford New Road near Leaf Street which provided accommodation for 300 inmates. This was soon found to be inadequate and in 1855 a new workhouse was opened at Nell Lane, Withington.
