New Build

At a meeting held in the vestry of the Parish Church of St. Michael in 1845, it was decided to build a new church to serve the hamlet of Charlestown. On the 6th March 1846, the establishment of the new parish was authorised and its boundaries defined. The site for the church and a school was given by the Trustees of the Seventh Earl of Stamford and Warrington.  However, the first plans drawn up were considered too costly and a modified design, prepared Dickson and Brakspear, architects, of Manchester, was finally accepted. The church, of brick with stone dressings and no tower, was built at a cost of £3121 and was consecrated by Dr Prince Lee first bishop of Manchester on 17th June 1848.
