CHRIST CHURCH SCHOOLS, MOSS SIDE - The ceremony of laying the foundation-stone of the new Sunday schools about to be erected in connection with Christ Church, Moss Side, took place on Monday afternoon.  The new schools are to be a substitution of the temporary school Coupland Street, which is too small to accommodate the number of scholars seeking admission. The site is on the west side of Carter Street, about one hundred yards distant from the church. The committee have succeeded in obtaining 1,400 square yards of land by a payment of £300, in addition to which there will be a small annual chief-rent chargeable. The schools are intended to accommodate 640 children; the number attending the present school is about 300. The cost will be about £2,000, towards which £1,700 has been already subscribed. It will be in the decorated style of architecture, and of two storeys. The upper room, which will run the entire length of the building, will be the girls' school, and will be suitable for congregational and other meetings. On the ground floor there will be boys' and infants' schools, with class rooms, etc. The playground will be enclosed within high wall. The length of the building will be 72 feet, and the width 32 feet. The altitude of the lower rooms will be 14 feet, and the upper room 31 feet. There will be special arrangements for ventilating the whole. There will also be pretty bell turret at the south end. The building will be of brick, faced with Yorkshire pierpoints and Hollington stone. In the Principal front there will be four well-proportioned gablets, containing handsome three-light windows, with traceried heads. The upper and lower windows will be connected by sunken stone panels. The roof will be of shaped and coloured Welsh slates, and will contain a peculiar provision regulating heat and cold. The architects are Messrs. Robert Goldsmith and Son, Faulkner-street, Manchester, and Mr. Mark Foggett is the contractor. The foundation stone was laid by Robert Gardner, Esq.  Mr. Robert Phillips, superintendent, in the name the congregation, presented to Mr. Gardner, a handsome silver trowel bearing the following inscription:  Presented to Robert Gardner, Esquire, patron of Christ Church, Moss Side, on the occasion of laying the foundation stone of the schools in connection with that church.—Manchester, April 9, 1860.
