By 1871 the thatched mediaeval church at Boughton was in a dilapidated condition, having been badly damaged by fire.  It was partially rebuilt, including rebuilding of the chancel and porch, new roofs, and repairs to the walls. The architect was Robert Jewell Withers, and the cost of the work, raised by public subscription, amounted to £1000. As rebuilt, the church contained 150 sittings and was built upon the foundations of its medieval predecessor. It comprises a western tower, a nave with a southern porch, and a narrower chancel. There are no internal pillars, aisles or transepts; the roof bridges both nave and chancel in a single span.

Working locally in 1868, Withers had already rebuilt both the chancel at Shouldham, a rather less restrained example of gothic revival than his later work at Boughton, and the roof at Barton Bendish, a design very similar to the one he was to use at Boughton.
