In 1892 the Duke of Devonshire donated land for a new church and in late 1893, Raymond Unwin was commissioned to design the building. Work commenced almost immediately, and the church was already half built when the 8th Duke and Duchess of Devonshire visited the village to formally lay the foundation stone on 22nd September 1894. In 1894 Barry Parker collaborated with Unwin over the design of St Andrew's Church, a prelude to the formation of a partnership in 1896, with an office in Buxton.
