HADFIELD - In reply to a recent advertisement in the Builder as to a new church at Hadfield, upwards of 100 applications from architects were received and 33 sets of plans were sent in. Ultimately Messrs Medland and Henry Taylor of Manchester were appointed the architects without competition by the unanimous vote of the committee. What about the 30 architects whose time and money was wasted? [Builder 18 November 1871 Page 909]

A church school had been opened in Hadfield in 1855 on a site given by Henry Granville Fitzalan Howard, 14th Duke of Norfolk in a sloping and irregular field at the back of the Railway Tavern. In February 1872 a site near this school was selected and granted by Lord Howard of Glossop at a cost of £557 and Medland and Henry Taylor were commissioned to design a building with a ground plan like that of Glossop Church but "with different external appearance, a much smaller spire and no gallery."

The contract for the foundation work was given to Mr. T. Holroyd and the Church was built by Mr. T. Wharam. The ceremonial laying of the foundation stone by the Vicar of Glossop, Rev. J. D. Knowles took place on 30th November 1872. It was consecrated by the Bishop of Lichfield, Dr. Selwyn on Saturday 4th July 1874 when it was "scarcely yet finished."
