Church of St Matthew, Chadderton, Oldham: Completion of Tower and Spire
ST MATTHEW'S CHURCH, CHADDERTON On Saturday and Sunday last festival services were held in St Matthew's Church, Chadderton, to celebrate the completion of the steeple, which has been erected in memory of the late Mrs Daniel Hague of Derker, Oldham, by her children, Mrs Hague having shown great interest in the church from its foundation. The church itself, including the lower portion of the steeple to a height of 30 feet, was built in 1857 from drawings by Mr Shellard of Manchester, and is in the Decorated style of architecture. The portion now completed, which carries the whole structure to a height of nearly 90 feet, including vane, was designed by Mr G E Street RA, of London, in a style corresponding with the rest of the building, but much richer in ornamentation. This design has been simplified; and the work has been executed by Messrs J Grundy and Sons, contractors, Middleton, under the superintendence of A H Stott and Sons, architects, of Manchester and Oldham. Note: the report is unclear as to responsibility for modifications of the original design by Street.
