The foundation stone was laid on Good Friday 1839, the Church opened for divine worship on 26th and 30th September 1841, and consecrated on the feast of St Peter and Paul by the Bishop of Chester in 1842.  [John Marius Wilson, Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales 1870-1872]

St. Paul's parish was formed in 1843. The church, in St. Paul street, erected in 1841, is a plain edifice of stone in the Gothic style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles and a western tower, with pinnacles, containing one bell: there are sittings for 600 persons, of which 540 are free. The register dates from the year 1842. [Kelly]

In 1898  Austin and Paley carried out alteration work on the church, including removing the galleries, repairing the roof, and installing new choir stalls and a font.

Badly damaged by fire, leaving tower and external walls only. Converted to apartments.
