A NEW BLACKPOOL CHURCH - The Bishop of Manchester (Dr Knox) opened and consecrated a new church for the parish of Marton, Blackpool, yesterday. The old church of St Paul was erected about 110 years ago. In 1800 there was neither chancel or tower to the church, and the new church is opened for worship under similar conditions. Fifty-seven years after the old church was erected it was lengthened at the east end and the tower added. The church porch was added in 1848 and the chancel in 1871. .... Mr J P Dixon, a parishioner, presented a site adjacent to the old church ... and a church for the accommodation of about 800 persons was decided upon. The portion built and opened yesterday comprises the nave and west end, with side aisles and temporary chancel vestries etc. providing accommodation for 450. The architects are Mr Frank Freeman of Bolton and Messrs Frank H Gorst and William Cardwell of Blackpool; the contractors were Messrs Dryland and Preston of Blackpool.
