Church of St Thomas, Lancaster Road, Preston
NEW CHURCH AT PRESTON - On Thursday last, the first stone of a new Church was laid at Preston, being the fourth commenced within that parish in the short period of about two years. The Church will be erected on an elevated plot of land between Lancaster Road and Moor Lane and will be a very handsome structure with a tower and spire. The following is a copy of the inscription engraved on a brass plate which was placed on the foundation stone : — " The first stone of this Church, to be called St. Thomas's Church, and to be built with funds granted by the Right Hon. John James Lord Raleigh, the Rev. William Dodsworth, Mrs. Margaret Ami Beckles, and Mrs. Susannah Beck- les, Henry, — trustees under the will of Miss Catherine Hyndman, was laid on Thursday, the 3rd day of August, in the year of our Lord 1837, being the first year of the reign of her Most Gracious Majesty, Queen Victoria, by the Rev Roger Cams Wilsou, M.A., vicar of Preston ; Thomas Pollard, Philip Addison, churchwardens of Preston : John Latham, surveyor of the works. Contractors: William Bond and William Marsden, masons ; Richard Aughton, carpenter; Joseph and James Pye, slaters; Robert and George Gregson, plasterers; John Walmsley, plumber. [T.
