CHURCH EXTENSIONS AT SWINTON – The Bishop of Manchester consecrated yesterday the new extension of Holy Rood Church, Swinton. The Holy Rood school chapel was built in 1865, when Swinton was made a separate parish, the population being estimated then at 6,000. In 1873 a church was built and opened. In 1909 a fund was started for the building of a new church, a side chapel and transept, a new porch and baptistery, and a new vestry as a memorial of the ministry of the Rev G F Dearden. It was re-opened last December, but its consecration had to be postponed, owing to the occurrence of some difficulties as to the transfer of the site. This postponed ceremony was carried out yesterday. The total cost of extensions and of alterations in the school amounts to about £2,500, of which £1,632 was raised by subscription, and £700 at a bazaar which was held last week.
