COCKINGTON CHURCH, DEVON - This design was submitted in competition. Owing to the slope in the site the vestries were arranged in the basement, and were entered from the outside on the level. The varying levels also suggested the picturesque arrangement of steps at the west end. The porches were designed as a protection from the prevailing westerly winds. The church had to be capable of being built in sections, and of accommodating 600 people at a cost of £6,000, exclusive of the tower. The turret on the north side gave access to screens across the whole width of the church and also on to the roof. Walter H. Brierley. [British Architect 25 January 1895 Page 58]
