Coffee Tavern, Shawclough, near Rochdale
A coffee tavern is in course of erection at Shawclough, Rochdale, for Mr. Thos. Watson, J.P. The building is two stories high at front and three at back. The tavern comprises two public rooms, each 40 feet by 33 feet with the necessary bars, pantries, etc, in addition, committee and reading rooms, each 22 feet by 16 feet 6in. Fire engine house 16 feet 6 in. by 16 feet, and two bedrooms 16it. 6in. by 16 feet; the kitchen and offices are in the basement. The style is Late Gothic. The walls are faced with Yorkshire pierpoints with ashlar dressings. The builder is Mr. T. Wilkinson, and the architects are Messrs. S. Butterworth and Duncan, 4, South-parade, Rochdale.
