NEW CONGREGATIONAL CHAPEL AT RIPPONDEN. On Saturday afternoon there was a large gathering at Ripponden, near Halifax, to witness the laying of the memorial stone of a new Congregational Church, which is in course of erection there. Among those present were Sir Francis Crossley, Bart., M.P. ; Lady Crossley;  and Mr. John Crossley, J.P., of Halifax. The new chapel and schools, which are being erected on a slight elevation on the Rushworth Road, are in the geometric Gothic style. The chapel will be 59 feet long and 38 wide, and is divided into nave and one aisle, having a short transept at the west end. The platform and pulpit will be in the centre of the nave, having an organ gallery behind, and a minister's vestry on the north side. At the east end will be a tower, surmounted by a spirelet rising to the height of 80 feet. There will be a cinquefoil wheel window at the east end, having lead lights in geometrical patterns and tinted glass. The school-room, which is nearly complete, is 45 feet by 27 feet, and has three class-rooms attached, there being separate yards for boys and girls. The seats in the chapel will be of pitch pine, and the roof and other timbers of American red deal, all stained and varnished. The masonry is of pitch-faced wall stones from the Greet- land quarries. In the school there will be accommodation for about 300 scholars, and the chapel will have 400 sittings.  The estimated cost is about £3000. The architects of the chapel are Messrs Paull and Robinson, of Manchester. [Bradford Observer 23 August 1869 page 4.
