TO BUILDERS – Persons desirous of tendering for the erection of a Congregational Church intended to be built at Green Mount, Tottington, near Bury, may inspect the drawings and obtain bills of quantities at the office of the Architects, on or after Tuesday the 24th instant. Tenders to be sent to the Architects not later than Tuesday 4 April. Woodhouse and Potts, Architects, Oldham. [Manchester Guardian 25 March 1865 page 8]

Greenmount lies on the southern edge of the West Pennine Moors and the church stands at the junction of Holcombe Road and Brandlesholme Road in the centre of the village. It was built as a replacement for the school/chapel of 1846 largely at the expense of Samuel Knowles, owner of Tottington Mill. The Lancashire Congregational Union donated £500 towards the cost of £3856. The foundation stone was laid by Samuel Knowles on 14 April 1865 and the church was opened in February 1867 with sittings for 580 persons. At the west end the prominent north-west spire, 105 feet high was balanced by an octagonal staircase tower although the galleries it was intended to serve never materialised

That the tenders were to be returned to the Oldham office of Woodhouse and Potts strongly suggests that Edward Potts was responsible for the design.
