STOCKPORT - A new Congregational church is about to be erected hero. The congregation at Orchard-street Chapel having some time ago received a grant of £1,000 from the Lancashire Bicentenary Fund towards a now church, on condition that it was erected by August 1865, measures were taken to forward the project, and a desirable plot of land for the structure was selected on Wellington-road South for the new edifice, the school and missionary operations to be continued in the old chapel. Plans were obtained, and the required sum was ascertained to be £4,500, towards which £3,115 have already been subscribed. The foundation stone of the new church will shortly be laid. STOCKPORT - The foundation-stone of a new Congregational chapel has been laid in Wellington-road, Stockport. The building, consisting of nave, aisles, transepts, chancels, and west gallery, will be erected in the Early Decorated style. The site immediately faces the Stockport Grammar Schools. The peculiar nature of the site has been taken advantage of in the design; the tower, with its attendant spire, forming a north-west porch, being situate at the corner of Mottram-street, with Wellington-road, having an altitude of 126 feet above the crown of the street. As a pendant to the tower and facing the road, will be another entrance, which contains a stone staircase leading to the west gallery. Accommodation is provided for about 900 sittings in open benches. In the chancel will be placed the choir, and fronting to the congregation provision will be made for the reception of an organ, in a chamber having arches opening to the body of the church. The walls will be faced with Pierrepoint wall-stone, mixed with stone bands and dressings. The architects are Messrs Speakman & Charlesworth, under whose direction Messrs David Cochran and Company will carry out the works. [The Builder 1 March 1865: page 198-199]
