Congregational Schools, Rochdale Road
NEW CONGREGATIONAL SCHOOLS - On Saturday Mr Peter Spence laid the foundation stone of a new school building which is being erected in connection with the Evangelical Union Congregational Church, on Rochdale Road near Queen=s Park. The building will be in the decorated Gothic style, and the materials used in it are brick, with Darley Dale and Welsh stone dressings. It will consist of two storeys, the lower one of which will be divided into classrooms, and the upper floor will be a large room 80 feet long by 30 feet wide, with a classroom of smaller dimensions. The schools have hitherto been conducted in the church, and are attended by about 350 children; but the new building will be capable of accommodating 700. The architect is Mr Mathias Seanor, and the builders are Messrs Adams and Marshall, Harpurhey. The cost is estimated at a little over £1,000. [Manchester Guardian Monday 16 August 1869 Page 3]
