STAND INDEPENDENT SCHOOLS AND CHAPEL HOUSE - The corner stone laying ceremony was performed on Saturday last, (23 June 1866) by Thos. Barnes, Esq., MP, of Bolton. Some delay has taken place in carrying out this plan, for the late depressed state of the cotton trade brought considerable suffering to this neighbourhood. The new schools will be two storeys high. The ground floor will contain the principal schoolroom, infant rooms, library, and five class rooms. The first floor will be appropriated to one large room 35 feet by 36 feet, and feet high. The basement will be devoted to a cooking kitchen, storeroom, and other offices. The minister's house will be adjacent to the schools, and will contain good dining and drawing rooms, kitchen, scullery, cellars, and pantry, four bedrooms, bathroom, &c. The style of the building will be early English, and it will be built of brick with stone dressings, from the designs of Mr. James Maxwell, Bury. The cost of the building is estimated at about £1,500. The accommodation of the old school was for about 250, but the new schools will afford ample room for about 600 children.
