Craigweil House, Aldwick, near Bognor Regis. Alterations and Additions
Originally a plain Classical-style building of three bays, Craigweil House was greatly enlarged by P Morley Horder in 1919 for the industrialist Sir Arthur du Cros, inventor of the pneumatic tyre, MP and chairman of Dunlop Rubber Company. Works included an elaborated third storey and a large two storey extension at each end. In front of the house the lawns swept down to the beach and 200 yards of private promenade. It was here that King George V stayed between 9 February and 15 May 1929 to recuperate, an event commemorated by the addition of ‘Regis’ to the town’s name Bognor. In 1930 the house and estate of 15 acres was offered for sale but failed to attract a buyer. Subsequently damaged by fire the house was demolished in 1938.
