When the burial grounds of Holy Trinity and St James’ Churches were almost full, Crompton Council purchased 14 ½ acres of land from Messrs J A & J Crompton in order to build a cemetery. It was opened on 23rd October 1881 by John Wolstencroft, Chairman of Crompton Local Board. The church portion was consecrated by the Bishop of Manchester on the same day. Three mortuary chapels were built: for the Church of England, the Non-Conformists and the Roman Catholics. Only the former remains (the others were demolished in the 1950s) which was converted into a Chapel of Rest for all denominations.
