NEW BRIDGE OVER THE IRWELL - The Cromwell Road bridge will be opened by the Mayor of Salford on the 10th proximo. It connects the Broughton and Pendleton sides of the river Irwell at a point opposite Great Cheetham Street, Lower Broughton, of which Cromwell Road is a continuation. The bridge is a lattice girder structure, ornamental in design, and rests upon solid Yorkshire stone abutments. It has a single span of 125 feet, having been made especially wide to allow for the improvement of the river channel. The bridge has been designed by the Borough Engineer (Mr Arthur Jacob) and erected at a cost of £10,000, which, with the exception of a contribution of £500 from the trustees of the late Mr J P Fitzgerald, will be met by the Pendleton district.
