English Congregational Church Gellywastad Road, Pontypridd
PONTYPRIDD - On Sunday the new church erected by the English Congrgationalis in Gellywastad Road, Pontypridd was formally opened. ….. This church is but six years old, having first been established in 1881 by 33 members of the Sardis (Welsh) Congregational Church. The services were at that time held in a schoolroom, capable of accommodating 220 members, but so rapidly did the church increase that a new building soon became an absolute necessity. As soon. therefore, as the cost of the old schoolroom, £800, had been defrayed, the members, who now number 116, at once undertook the task of building the present handsome edifice. The architect was Mr Hennings of the firm of Messrs Potts, Sulman, and Hennings and the contractors were Messrs Turner and Sons, Cardiff. Mr Hinds was clerk of the works. The building, which will accommodate 616 persons, is early Gothic in style, and the total cost will. it is estimated, reach £2,900. [Cardiff Times Saturday 18 February 1888 page 6]
