Enlargement of Christ Church, Salford
ENLARGEMENT OF CHRIST CHURCH, SALFORD - The enlargement of this church is now completed, with the exception of the painting. Another pillar and a chancel six yards in length, have been added to the building, giving to the whole a finish and a beauty of proportion seldom surpassed. The chancel especially is quite an architectural gem, and reflects – as, indeed, does the entire addition – the highest credit on the taste and skill of Mr Shellard, the architect. The introduction of light over the communion table, entirely from the roof, has an exquisite effect. By means of the enlargement, about 180 appropriated sittings, 100 free sittings for adults and 150 for Sunday-scholars, have been added to the accommodation of the church, making it one of the largest in the parish of Manchester.
