CHARLTON, WANTAGE - On the festival of SS. Simon and Jude a new chancel, organ chamber, and vestry, as an addition to the temporary church, which has done duty for forty years, were dedicated to the service of God. The chancel is built of local red bricks, from designs by Mr. Withers, architect, with an apsidal east-end, windows being placed in the canted sides and south wall. The altar is raised four steps, above which is a stone shelf for cross and candles, and some panelled stonework with, mosaics. A rich silk dossal and wings give colour and dignity to the same. The boys’ and men’s desks are of English oak, and the floor of rich tile paving. [Church Times 6 November 1891 page 1074]

Part of Oxforsdhirre since 1974

The church of CHARLTON was originally built as a chapel of ease to Wantage in 1848. The chancel was added in 1891, and in 1906 the original nave was taken down and rebuilt, so that none of the original church now remains. In its present state it is a structure of red brick and stone in the 14thcentury Gothic style and consists of a nave with aisles and small transepts and a chancel with a three-sided apse. Timber posts divide the nave and aisles, and there is a timber bellcote at the west end.
