Plans have been prepared by Messrs. Paley and Austin, of Lancaster, for the proposed extension, at an estimated cost of £5,400, of St. John the Baptist's Church, Atherton. The church, which was originally erected in 1723, was rebuilt in 1814, and again (at a cost of £10,000) in 1879. [Building News 18 April 1890 page 570]

ST JOHN’S CHURCH ATHERTON, NEAR MANCHESTER – Contractors desirous od submitting tenders for the COMPLETION of WESTERN PORTION and NEW SOUTH PORCH to the above church may see the plans and specification on application at the Vestry, Atherton, from Wednesday 17 September to Wednesday 1 October. Bills of quantities may be obtained on application to Mr W Wright, surveyor, Lancaster. Tenders are to be delivered under cover to the architects, Messrs Paley Austin and Paley, Lancaster, not later than Thursday 2 October. The lowest or any tender will not necessarily be accepted.
