First Church of Christ Scientist, Corbar Road, Stockport
Built 1929-1930 and designed by Arnold England of Lytham St Annes. A red brick building with stone copings. The entrance porch and ancillary rooms, flat roofed and on one storey, surround the double height hexagonal worship area. The building was converted for use as a private house about 2005 and is now locally listed. [Richard Fletcher]
The opening services of the new First Church of Christ Scientist (branch of the Mother Church, the First Church of Christ Scientist, Boston, Mass.) at Corbar Road, Mile End, Stockport, will be held on Sunday next, the 19th, The church is built with a facing of Dutch hand-made multi-coloured bricks and Darley Dale stone on a structural steel frame and brick walls. The octagonal auditorium has a seating capacity of 400 with two foyers; semi-circular entrance hall and cloakrooms; and at the rear are the readers’ rooms organ loft and stores, The two foyers are arranged so that they can be thrown open to the auditorium. Special features of the interior decorations are extensive oak work and a beautiful electric lighting effect. The architect was Mr Arnold England M.S.A.
