FIVE-DAY WEEK. NEW FURNITURE WORKS AT TRAFFORD PARK - A five-day working week is to be instituted in his new factory at Trafford Park, by Mr. I. Freedland, furniture manufacturer, oi Cheetham, Manchester. Mr. Freedland has recently concluded the purchase of a 15-acre site in Trafford Park, and plans have been approved for the erection there of a modern factory, which, It is estimated, will find employment for fully 2,000 hands. The welfare of the employees will be provided for in the erection of up-to-date canteen accommodation and the provision of large recreation grounds. In these days of trade, it is encouraging to hear of any instance of a business expanding to the point of requiring new accommodation. It is only six years since the firm found it necessary to build their modern works at Cheetham as their Pendleton works were inadequate. the Cheetham works have become too small and will be used as showrooms only. A railway siding is already in course of construction to connect the new factory to the Trafford Park docks and the main-line railway systems. [Manchester Guardian 17 July 1929 page 3]
In 1937 the company was bought out by Great Universal Stores. On 21 July 1939 a fire caused extensive damage to the polishing, spraying and cabinet making departments and offices. A great amount of timber was also. destroyed. The business never fully recovered probably as a result of war-time restrictions.
