THE BLEACHERS’ GARDEN VILLAGE, FIRST HOUSES OPENED AT UNSWORTH – The building scheme of the Pilsworth and Unsworth Garden Village Limited is making progress in spite of building difficulties, and on Saturday Lieutenant Colonel Sir Alan J Sykes MP officially opened the first competed portion at North Unsworth. The site is near to three large works belonging to the Bleachers Association Limited, and so soon as industrial conditions improve the entire scheme will be proceeded with. Since the house shortage, which led to the formation of the Company, the Bleachers Association, prompted by Sir Alan Sykes as chairman, has displayed great interest in the provision of fit dwellings for its employees. Provision is made in the scheme for 117 houses and two shops, for a recreation ground, allotments, a central drive, and if it should be desired, a village institute. The first part of the scheme comprises twenty houses, of which six were opened on Saturday. Of the twenty, ten are without parlours and ten with parlours. The layout has been designed on the latest garden village principles, so as to allow of the maximum amount of light, air and sunshine for the houses, to preserve and improve the amenities of the district, and to ensure that all the land shall be used only for residential purposes. Some of the houses have been temporarily furnished by different firms, so that visitors may see what is possible in this way. The architect, Mr J D Mould presented Sir Alan Sykes with a key to open the completed houses. [Manchester Guardian 27 June 1921 page 10]
