Eight local architects were invited to compete, Messrs. J. H. Woodhouse (placed first), H. Lord, Mangnall and Littlewood, G. H. Willoughby, A. Greenwood, H. Broadbent, E. Woodhouse, and another, whose name was not attached to his drawings. Two of the competitors sent double sets of drawings.  The scale selected was 8 ft. to 1 in., which put competitors to a great deal of useless trouble. The experience of other educational committees is entirely in favour of sixteenth scale for competition drawings. It is to be hoped that in future competitions the smaller scale will be preferred in Salford also.

MR. H. LORD has sent in two complete sets of drawings. His plans are very clever, and he must have been a dangerous competitor. He provides light along the entire length of his central halls - a considerable advantage.  In one scheme he has three classrooms ranged alongside the hall; in the other, five. The infants' school is planned as a. separate building; consequently, his laboratory and lecture‑room are placed on the second floor, and that may have lost him the winning place. His plans are remarkable for their appearance of simplicity. [Building News 23 March 1906 409-410]
