“High Green,” Ilkley, Yorkshire.
“HIGH GREEN,” ILKLEY, YORKSHIRE - This house has been erected for Ernest Gaunt, Esq., from the designs of Mr. Walter H. Brierley, FSA., FRIBA., of York. The peculiarities of the site necessitated a rather narrow type of plan, with the principal rooms facing south and west, and a bay window facing west - whence the principal view up the valley of the Wharfe is obtained. The design follows and harmonises with the traditional manner of building peculiar to the Yorkshire dales, with walls of local stone and roof covered with red tiles, the windows having stone mullions with steel opening lights and leaded glazing. The walls of the hall and dining-room are panelled in oak, and the staircase and screen are of the same material. The general contractors were Messrs J. Wood & Sons, of Leeds.
